How to Reallocate Your Energy: Breaking the Mental Script of December Overwhelm

What comes to mind when you think of the holiday season?

Without fail, whenever November rolls around, my mind plays a familiar movie: parents racing through crowded malls, frantically searching for last-minute gifts, stress etched across their faces. The holidays, according to this mental script, are a time of overwhelm, chaos, and exhaustion.

I hear the common internal soundtrack:

  • “The holidays are always crazy.”

  • “It’s such a busy and hectic time.”

  • “There’s no time to relax.”

  • “I’m always falling behind.”

I don’t even have kids, nor do I have that many people to shop for! Yet, this image of frantic exhaustion is deeply etched in my brain. Why am I creating this story of holiday chaos, and what is it costing me?

When I shared with my coach, “I feel so overwhelmed lately. I have too much to do and I’m not being as productive as I’d like to be,” she gave me a gentle reminder: Flowers don’t bloom all year round. Maybe we shouldn’t expect ourselves to either.

I decided to accept it and test a new belief: Could I change this default story of holiday chaos? What would it feel like to try on a new belief?

I created a powerful question to wonder about: “How can I embrace genuine rest this holiday season?”

This Thanksgiving - my only plan was simply to be.

I gave myself four full days off during Thanksgiving. I enjoyed a small Friendsgiving dinner, long naps, and an open calendar with no calls scheduled.

At first, I felt restless. Was I missing out? Was I doing something wrong by not hustling and taking advantage of these days to get ahead?

I had to keep reminding myself: I’m not following someone else’s script. I’m intentionally creating a new one. I was setting aside this time to allow my body and mind to truly rest.

At the end of this recharge, I experienced a POWERFUL breathwork session with Club Reset. My body was buzzing from the experience, and my mind was full of new ideas, energy, and excitement. The deep relaxation allowed me to realize: I wasn’t completely burnt out; I was just spending my energy in ways that weren't fulfilling.

With this new realization, I’m leaning fully into my coaching practice.

While I enjoy working with my nonprofit clients, it’s not where my real passion lies. I set firmer boundaries with these clients, no longer participating in the fire drill of "we need this now now now." This reallocation of my time, and the stress I now refuse to take on, has given me back the energy to pour into my true genius: working with people and guiding them through their big transformations.

If you’ve been on the corporate grind all year and can feel the year’s tension gathering in your shoulders and are craving a genuine nervous system reset before the new year, this intentional pause is for you.
